Urban Ark welcomes two new volunteers to its Food Sovereignty Aquaponics Project Group.

Laura Morita: Laura is a life-long resident of West Los Angeles, having grown up in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California. She has been an ocean lover and an intense fisherwoman for over twenty years. She has logged countless ocean hours and possesses keen, first-hand knowledge of the Pacific, between the Santa Monica Bay and the Catalina Islands. She is passionate about preserving and regenerating our marine ecosystems for generations to come. Ms. Morita has also been an activist for the equitable housing and care of senior citizens. In particular, she is adamant that our elders depend on non-toxic, organically grown, and traceable nutrition sources. She brings her lived-experience as a senior rights activist, passion for food, and the ocean to the Aquaponics Project Group.

Charde Romero: Charde is a member of the Taos Pueblo tribe in New Mexico. Having spent much of her childhood on the reservation, she is familiar with the challenges and joys of growing up between the urban Indian experience and her ancestral home. She is a licensed educator with an interest in permaculture and off-grid living. She has dreamed of an aquaponics facility on her home reservation and hopes to make it a reality.
